Job Description:

Evaluates medical records and assigns appropriate clinical diagnoses and procedure codes in accordance with nationally recognized coding guidelines for the development for organization wide database and submission of accurate hospital claims.  Accurately codes diagnoses and procedural information according to ICD and CPT principles and conventions for all outpatient services, observation, uncomplicated inpatients, therapeutic outpatients, single visit diagnostic and ED outpatient visits.  Responsible for meeting minimum quality and productivity standards.  Provides all customers of Benewah Community Hospital with an excellent service experience by consistently demonstrating our Performance Imperatives.  Contacts members of the medical staff for clarification in cases where documentation in the record is unclear or insufficient to determine correct code assignment.  Contributes as a team player to maintain the facility defined hold for unbilled accounts receivable.  Must successfully meet accuracy and productivity standards of this level for six months before advancing to the next coding level within the department.  Performs all functions according to established policies, procedures, regulatory and accreditations requirements as well as applicable professions standards.

Essential Job Functions and Physical Requirements:

  • Codes and abstracts charts using ICD and CPT coding system.
  • Completes doctor charge sheets and inputs appropriate charges on Cerner.
  • Performs analysis to confirm that information for coding IP, OBS, OP, and Surgery is on charts.
  • Regular and predictable attendance is and essential job function.
  • Majority of shift spent sitting.
  • No or very limited physical effort required.
  • No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
  • Communicate with patients, physicians, families and co-workers in person and on the telephone.
  • Work with equipment and manipulate equipment settings, computer keyboard, etc.

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Coding Certification; AAPC, RHIT, RHIA, CCS, or CCS-P required.
  • Minimum of 1 year experience as a coder in a hospital setting is preferred.
  • Anatomy and Physiology and Pharmacology.
  • Must possess extensive knowledge of medical documentation and confidentiality requirements for medical records.
  • Knowledge of 3M Software preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of ICD/CPT coding principles, coding software and the AHIMA coding competencies.
  • Effective human relations skills are required for interacting with all levels of hospital staff, including physicians.
